Sounds like what they have in many rural US areas. Huge drainage ditches by the road for downpours etc. My sister's marriage carriage got pulled into a large one in Germany after one of the two horses died on the way to the reception. The poor dead one dragged the terrified other horse and everything else along with it. Now that's a day to remember.
I'm a former IT consultant from New Jersey who served as a US Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon from 2006-2009. I taught computer science and English classes at a small university in the village of Nanga Eboko for two years and then worked as a small business development volunteer in Buea. This blog is a chronicle of my experiences there. I hope you enjoy it.
